Sierra Nevada Brewing Co | Hoptimum | 10.4% ABV
Sierra Nevada seems to be able to do no wrong with me lately. Hoptimum is their annual double IPA release and it’s fantastic! Sweet. Bitter. Fresh. Floral. This is a great IPA. If you can get your hands on it, do it! Love it.
Russian River | Pliny the Elder | 8% ABV
So a friend of mine just got back from a trip to the west coast and managed to secure me a bottle of this much sought after, much hyped IPA by Russian River. This is a very good IPA but not the power house the internet would lead you to believe. I wouldn’t go out of your way to trade for this. I’m sure you have a regional IPA that is just as good. The only thing I can really say is that it goes down like a session beer but packs quite a punch at 8% ABV. If you’re on the west coast definitely get some but other than that….eh.
Price: $4.99/16oz bottle
Southern Tier Brewing Co | 2XIPA | 8.2% ABV
I like a lot of southern tier stuff but I’ve only ever tried their bomber releases. I’m pretty pumped to start giving their 12oz stuff a try. What better place to start than with a double IPA!? No surprise, this is pretty good. It’s not just good, it’s distinct. When you drink a lot of IPA’s they tend to start to taste alike. This one is different. More sweet than bitter. Smooth. Give it a shot!
Central Waters | Illumination | 9% ABV
Is this hate week on the Beer Jerk Blog!? This is beer hate 2 or 3. For a double IPA, this beer is pretty stagnant when it comes to taste and complexity. It has the normal citrus/grapefruit flavoring associated with IPA’s high in alcohol volume and nothing else. I wonder how much freshness is a factor with this brew. It was bottled towards the end of January so maybe… This isn’t necessarily bad. Just generic and uninteresting. There are a lot better choices out there is what I’m trying to say. Pass.
He’brew The Chosen Beer | Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. | 10% ABV
Double India Pale Ale
Post-Humorously (get it?) named after the comedian Lenny Bruce, this beer does exactly what it set out to do. It is both bitter…AND sweet. “Brewed with an obscene amount of malts and hops.” They weren’t fackin kidding. This is a thick, dark, and delicious IPA. Heavy carmel malt flavor. Bitter hoppy after taste. I like having a beer like this around the house. It definitely shocks the palet but it also gets you scrumpy. Give it a shot.
